Blog plug (blug?) [jan. 19e, 2009|10:17 am]
[Musique actuelle |Bill... - Mathieu Boogaerts]

I has a blog.

In case you hadn't noticed, we are in an economic crisis here. (Dot com.)

Because I lost my job and have nothing better to do.

Tough Decisions [oct. 11e, 2008|02:11 am]
We all know the economy is a complete mess right now. I have no real understanding of economics, so I don't understand why, but I listen to NPR and I read the New York Times, and I know at least superficially how bad the situation is. The organization I work for is starting to realize it too (about six months too late) and so it didn't really surprise me, after one budget scare, that our General Manager informed our senior staff that the we're going to have some tough decisions to make in order to keep the doors open. Unfortunately, I was the first casualty of these Tough Decisions.

Obviously, a cliffhanger. )

Next up in the series of ill-planned and hastily executed experiments that defines my life:

I just canceled my cable. Either I am going to go crazy or, more likely, the quality of my life will improve dramatically.

This is one of the most astonishing articles I have ever read.

It's probably because of the day I had today, but I can't even think of how to formulate a response. My thoughts and feelings on this are more complex than calculus.

update [jan. 26e, 2008|05:12 pm]
[Humeur actuelle |fatigué]

So, a things.

  1. I got my second raise since I started at COCA full-time. Two raises and one promotion, and I'm only in month 8. Pretty good, right? Also, I negotiated raises for all of my staff members. I am so cool.

  2. I am about to enter one of the nuttiest months of my life in the past couple of years. I have two auditions (well, I am auditioning to cover a solo with the St. Louis Symphony Chorus and I am auditioning for an opera company), I am running the supertitles for the WU opera (it will help pay my billz), there are two weeks at least where I will have to be at COCA six days in a row (good news: I now get flex time. Sweet.), we are about to hit the busy season at Ladue Chapel (Lent/Easter), and I have a concert with the Symphony Chorus. I am more excited than terrified, and I think that bodes well.

  3. I am in my last class at Wash U, which is the 19th C Novel, taught by Pascal Ifri. I am reading Balzac now (actually reading Balzac, not pretending to like I did in the other three classes where I had to read Le Père Goriot), and I am loving it. Good thing: my first paper isn't due until April.

  4. I have grown so much in the past year that sometimes I can't believe it was this time last year that I could hardly get myself out of bed. I can't even believe that was me.

I want all of you to promise me something. If I ever get awfully depressed again and overdose on drugs, or if I get killed in a car crash, or if I die unexpectedly and tragically, or even if I die comically in a very expected way: Please do not create a group on Facebook in my memory. It's tacky and if I were a ghost who could log in to Facebook, I would probably find it really insulting. Even if I died in Mary Kate Olsen's apartment or whatever: tacky tacky tacky. Thank you.

1. Write more.

2. Sing more.

3. Figure out how to get my ass out of bed fifteen minutes earlier every weekday.

I love my job because:

Today one of my coworkers built a fort around her desk using spare office supplies and leftover fabric from one of the summer camps. I walked downstairs to see her desk draped off, and when I asked her why she said it was because she didn't want to be disturbed. Because clearly that is an excellent reason to build a fort around your desk.

...Awesome.

Why Sunday was the best day ever:
  1. Law & Order: SVU marathon on USA.
  2. I baked pita bread. And made tzatziki. After straining my own yogurt.
  3. The Bourne Ultimatum. holycowwwwwwwwwwmattdamon
  4. I cleaned.

Why Monday was the second best day ever:
  1. The Overnight Glockenspiel Fairy visited COCA. Three half-assembled glockenspiels (along with their component parts) were left outside the back door sometime between 5PM on Saturday and 9AM on Monday. I reassembled two of them and took one home because no one knew why they were there. Now when someone is like "What the H is a glockenspiel?" I can say, "It's this." And then play them a song. My glockenspiel: let me show you it.
  2. I taught myself how to play some Mozart and Wolf (, Hugo) on the glockenspiel. Because I also happened to have my music with me post-assembly. I was scheduled to give my first ever all-COCA glockenspiel recital at 2PM today but couldn't because I ended up having to do pesky things like answering the phone and assisting patrons.
  3. I cleaned some more.

My first two days back in the states have been kind of miserable, thank you very much, but when I got home from work and dinner this evening, I found a flyer from this (or that, if you're not much of a linguist) on my floor.

It just makes me wonder what I am burning for, that's all.

level up [juin. 19e, 2007|08:57 pm]
[Musique actuelle |10:15 Saturday Night - The Cure]

I got a promotion! (if you know what that sound bite is from, I will give you a cookie or blowjob.)

My fancy new title is "Front Office Manager" and I get to be: in charge of people, at my own desk (with space for my framed photo of Matty Matt Damon), and saner. And the nice thing is that my boss assured me that I actually deserved said promotion even though to the naked eye it looks like I was only promoted because everyone else quit. Meh.

Anyway I'm good. I'm also leaving for France on Tuesday 26 Jun (one week eeeeeeeeeeeee!). If you would like me to send you a post-card, please e-mail me with your name, address, and preferred language of contact (choices: french, english, pig-latin). You can also include extraneous information (mobile number) for me to put in my address book. If you wish.

Today my boss brought me homemade crème brûlée and a miniature blowtorch to use at my desk.

Also: I have had enough of the middle schoolers repeatedly rehearsing "Seasons of Love" within shouting distance (okay, singing distance) of my workspace. There is not enough delicious French custard in the world to make up for that.

Also: An embarrassing moment. I was singing "A Whole New World" from Disney's Aladdin at full blast at the front desk. My eyes were closed and I was using the wrist rest of the keyboard as a mock microphone (mockrophone?). The Executive Director, my boss's boss's Boss, happened to walk down the stairs behind me just as I hit the modulation. When I realized what was going on, there was an awkward silence, and then I greeted her as if she hadn't just heard me describe, in song, a romantic but plot-forwarding magic carpet ride.

Also: I'm dehydrated.

WORST MEME EVER [mai. 30e, 2007|10:07 am]

In a comment, list five reasons you love Richard Strauss. No repeating.

OBVIOUSLY I AM JOKING FOOLZ! I realize that no one is actually going to do this, except to spite me. I just want to say that I fucking LOVE STRAUSS kthxbye

I just heard this recording of Natalie Dessay singing "Ombre légère" from Le Pardon de Ploermel where she sings a high A-flat at the end of the cadenza. I nearly crapped myself.

That shit is bananas.
